Program
Available For Finding
and Indexing Keywords and Phrases
A program is available to help you make your own index files, such as those in the Topical Samples, with the following features:
1. Search through any directory (including sub-directories) of files
a. MS Word documents ( .doc )
b. Web pages ( .htm .html or .asp)
c. Power Point presentations ( .ppt )
d. Text files ( .txt )
e. Rich Text Format files ( .rtf )
2. Locate keywords or phrases from within any of the files;
3. Select the amount of text that precedes and follows those located keywords, to form a context, in which that keyword or phrase was discussed (you can specify the amount before and after); and
4. Build a single (.htm) file, made up of the contexts from any files that contain the keywords or phrases, noting the file names from which the contexts were selected, and highlighting any words that the user chooses to highlight, whether search words or not. The output file can be viewed with any Internet Browser.
A Suggested Directory Structure for Searching the Framework Series:
C:\Bible_Srch\ Main Directory, containing more than just Charlie Clough’s materials
C:\Bible_Srch\Authors\ Directory containing specific authors (e.g. Josephus, Chafer, …)
C:\Bible_Srch\Conferences\ Directory containing conferences (e.g. Pre-Trib_Research_Center, …)
C:\Bible_Srch\Conferences\Pre-Trib_Research_Center\
C:\Bible_Srch\Early_Church\ Directory, containing early writings (e.g. Luther, Augustine, … )
C:\Bible_Srch\Journals\ Directory, containing Journal articles (e.g. Chafer, BibSac, ETS, CST)
C:\Bible_Srch\Pastors\ Directory, containing writings of pastors (e.g. Dean, Clough, Thieme, …)
C:\Bible_Srch\Pastors\Clough\ Directory, containing Framework class handout “Notes” and “Transcripts.”
The following are automatically generated on installing the phraSEarch program:
C:\phraSEarch\ Directory containing phraSEarch program and supporting files.
C:\Phrasearch\Help\ Directory containing phraSEarch Help files.
C:\Phrasearch\SearchParms\ Directory containing phraSEarch parameter files (for re-use).
C:\Phrasearch \Topical\ Directory for storing search result files.
Download and Installation Steps:
1. Download the Install_phraSEarch_1.7.exe (by clicking, and Saving it to your hard drive) and Install phraSEarch (by double-clicking the saved file name). Then, follow the instructions provided (mostly clicking “Next”). The installation does not modify your Windows Registry. It only copies files to your hard drive.
2. Download ZIP files for the Notes and Transcriptions, and unzip them into C:\Search_Clough
3. After installation, to start the program, either Double-Click the Shortcut Icon on the Desktop or the SEARCH.exe filename in the folder.
4. When the form appears on your display, use the /View/ pull-down menu to adjust the font size until the headings, along the left side, are readable. This is usually unnecessary, unless you are using a small screen or notebook computer.
5. Pay close attention to any messages that appear in the messages window.
6. If you have any errors to report, do not hesitate to email me at twright@chafer.edu, attaching any LOGnnn.TXT files.
7. Try out the Tutorial, watching it fill the fields, and using the buttons that it suggests.
